To a Lost Whale [
To a Lost Whale 喪われたクジラへ by Mizuno Ruriko ( translated by Edwin A .Cranston)
Sometimes I wonder Aren't you out there even now floating your sick body on the waves pouring out your life in a song of love sung on and on?
O whale -- what crippled your sense of direction? For all the world as if you feared to drown taht day you fled the sea toward us (and I --it was then I met you......)
I love you Enameled as you were with stardust of the sea with barnacles and shells you fell away alone enormous from the dark I love the bigness that is you Listen −− when I pressed my ear to your wet skin I felt for the first time -- oh, yes -- with my own touch the briny beating of the universe between the dazzle of the sky and sand
(Maybe, eons ago, I shared with you, aquatic ape that I was, the frothy atmospehre of milk churned up by blustering storms. Foster brother and sister, perhaps we fed at the same breast. A fragment of green forest sunken in your brain, the shadow of a waving polyp etched in gray on my retina.......But our lives have been classified , and in the end our souls no doubt will vanish like two separate drops of blood drying on the sand. Without ever combining into one.)
Yet the day will come O whale when between our two bleached skulls sea spume driven by the wind will blow again and then we shall return you and I to the one song sung on this great earth
O whale far away
